A Fall Garden

Less Chance of Heat Stress and Wilt

For those of you in hot climates, in zone 8 or above, a fall garden may be just the approach for you. In zone 8 and above mid-summer (June, July, and August) can be viciously hot. Any garden other than a cactus garden will require extra care and attention with daily highs at or near 100 degrees F.

With that said, you folks may want to sit out the mid summer months and start up in the fall. In central Texas, mid August is a good time to start. In Phoenix, you might want to wait until mid September.

Plant your fall vegetable garden the same as you would plant in the spring, and in October or November, enjoy the harvest!

Good Fall Vegetable Crops

Plant in the late summer for fall harvest:

Tips For Bale Planting

If you are considering planting in a straw bale then you might consider purchasing your bales in the late summer or early fall.
  • bales of straw are cheapest at that time
  • you can leave them out over the winter to weather for easier spring planting

Bulbs Need to be Planted in Fall

And don't forget many flowering bulbs need to be planted in the fall. This site is mostly about vegetable gardening, but I do mention flowers from time to time.

Fall bulbs include:

  • daffodil
  • tulip
  • hyacinth
  • crocus

Good luck with your garden!
